As a Biology teacher, I often use examples from my own life to help students better understand key concepts. In this article, I will use my own experience of starting a family to illustrate the process of reproduction and inheritance. I will also share some personal anecdotes from home visits with my students, including visits to my own household.
Before discussing reproduction and inheritance, it is important to understand my family background. My husband and I were both born and raised in China. We come from typical families with two parents and multiple siblings. As adults, we decided to start our own family and we currently have two children.
Reproduction is the process by which organisms create new individuals of the same species. In humans, reproduction typically involves sexual intercourse between a male and female. During this process, sperm from the male fertilizes an egg from the female, resulting in a zygote. The zygote then undergoes mitosis and cell division to form an embryo, which eventually becomes a fetus and later a fully-formed human baby.
Inheritance refers to the passing on of genetic traits from parents to their offspring. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, with half coming from the mother and the other half coming from the father. Each chromosome carries many genes, which are responsible for traits such as eye color, hair color, and height. When a sperm fertilizes an egg, the resulting zygote inherits a unique combination of genes from both parents.
As someone who has gone through pregnancy and childbirth twice, I have a lot of personal experience with the process of reproduction. During my pregnancies, I experienced many physical and emotional changes, including morning sickness, weight gain, and mood swings. In terms of inheritance, I noticed that both of my children inherited certain physical traits from my husband and me. For example, my daughter inherited her father's broad shoulders and her mother's curly hair, while my son inherited his mother's nose and his father's chin.
One way that I connect with my students is by visiting their homes and getting to know their families. During these visits, I have had the opportunity to observe firsthand how different families pass on traits through generations. For example, I visited the home of a student named MD0076 and noticed that he had the same distinctive nose shape as his father and grandfather. In another home visit with a student named MD0050, I saw that he had inherited his mother's bright blue eyes.
By sharing my personal experiences with reproduction and inheritance and my observations from home visits with my students, I hope to help my students better understand these important biology concepts. Through these examples, my students can see how genetics plays a role in the formation and diversity of families and individuals.
